Scholarships:
The
Janice A. Hamon Memorial: Nursing Scholarship
- What: An award of $1000 to a deserving Licensed
Practical Nursing student at the Capitol Area School of Practical
Nursing. One scholarship is awarded per calendar year.
- History: This award has been established
in memory of Janice A. Hamon, who, despite poverty and other
adversities, established herself as a healthcare professional.
Janice learned the 1950’s equivalent of LPN-level patient
care working as the office assistant of a physician / surgeon
in rural Illinois. Due to lack of funds and unavailability of
suitable schooling, Janice was never able to become a licensed
nurse. Nevertheless, she “lived” her dream by encouraging
many other younger persons to believe in themselves and to dedicated
themselves to a career in nursing or related healthcare professions.
- Even in her last days at a nursing home, she became known
as “Mom” to a generation of young healthcare staff.
She listened, prayed, cared and kept confidence for many of
those who gave her care. All during her life, Janice embodied
the ideals of dedication, seeing the inherent worth of all persons,
trustworthiness and selfless service that are the nursing profession’s
highest ideals.
